How do you move forward, when you don't know how to move forward?

How do you find out what you need to know to move forward, how do you take that knowledge gap and close that knowledge gap?

Well, there’s ways to do that. I experienced that many times, and this sounds funny to admit, I didn’t know how to move forward. You see I’ve lived in three continents, I’ve had over 10 businesses. But what I want to share with you today is when I moved from Italy to Brazil.

I was in Italy running a sales organization, and the company wanted to expand to Brazil. They asked me to head up the operation, I said, sure sounds like fun. I’ll go to Brazil, itโ€™s beautiful, there are beaches, mountains, and huge cities. Should be fantastic.

So I get on a plane, I go to Brazil. I don’t know anyone, I don’t speak the language. And I’m starting to shake in my boots.

My list of what I didn’t know was really large, the list of what I knew was quite small, I got in touch with the American Consulate. It seemed like a good first step.

They put me in touch with some lawyers. I called them and invited them to lunch, one of them accepted. My objective was to go to a fine restaurant and order the best plates that took time. I really didn’t care about the cost, I wanted the time.

We had anti-pasta, we had pasta, we had the meats, we had the coffee, we had the desserts. And I ask questions, and the list of what I didn’t know shrunk as the list of what I knew grew. And I knew enough to speak, at least with some intelligence, about business in Brazil.

I went on and formed a business in Brazil. I stayed in Brazil for nine years, but in the beginning, it was all about closing that knowledge gap

You might find yourself in a situation where you arenโ€™t sure how to move forward. There are some things you can do. Here are somethings I did that can also help you.

  3. Take action. take action to actively close that knowledge gap, because moving forward creates momentum and that’s what you need to do.
